Case Study

In Graphic Design II, we had to create three movie posters, all with the same name but different film genres. I decided to pick this one as my case study to show that you can use traditional art for graphic design.

First, I chose a horror sci-fi genre. I began by sketching out my vision for the poster, focusing on the overall composition and mood. In my design, I illustrated a man holding a sci-fi gun, with alien-like tentacles closing in around him to create a sense of tension and danger.

Next, I inked my sketch, which helped bring the image to life by adding bold lines and clarity. After completing the inking process, I converted the artwork into a digital file so I could refine and finish the design.

I brought the picture into Photoshop, where I colored it digitally so I could give it a sci-fi horror feel with the colors. I started by coloring the background first and then moved on to the character. After I got the basic colors down, I added all the shading and details it needed to really come to life.

After that was done, I made it into a movie poster by adding the lead actors at the top along with the title of the movie at the bottom. Then I added what all movies need: the release date, the rating, and the company that made the movie. This is to show that traditional art can be used in the form of graphic design, and everything we see in graphic design often starts on paper before making it to the big screen.
